 EU
Commission adopts a proposal to fight CybercrimeOn
the 19th April 2002 the EU Commission adopted a proposal to go
to the Council of Ministers, the European Parliament, the Economic
and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions seeking
a decision on a framework to harmonise the criminal law of member
states to combat attacks on information systems and to better
promote information security across the EU. The
Communication entitled "Creating a Safer Information Society
by Improving the Security of Information Infrastructures and Combating
Computer Related Crime" seeks to promote the harmonisation
of the criminal codes of member states so as to facilitate co-operation
against unauthorised access attacks (hacking), denial of service
attacks and the introduction into information systems of malicious
software (viruses). The
framework decision must be adopted unanimously by the Council
of Ministers following a consultation with the European Parliament,
before it enters into force.
